Twenty years of rugs, and one child’s floor

Nestaground did not start as a brand. It started because we could not find, for our own son, the rug we knew was possible.

Twenty years of rugs, and one child’s floor — Nestaground

How it began

Nestaground was born in our home, in Spain, when we were looking for a truly healthy, natural and deeply comfortable rug for our son’s first months on the floor. After more than twenty years in the world of rugs, with clients on every continent and pieces sent to more than fifty countries, we could not find it.

So we made it. The first Nestaground was Bill’s. He played on it, he learned to walk on it, and it is still with us — which is, in the end, the only durability test that means anything.

A new name, then, but an experience already proven by life rather than by a launch plan.

Who makes it

Nestaground is carried by Lamia Boua and Wilfrid Thoumazeau, from our atelier. We follow every piece ourselves: the design, the knotting, the washing, the restoration, and the long tail of care that comes after a rug enters a home.

That is also why there is no sales team. When you write to us, one of us answers, and it is the same person who will still be there when the rug needs washing in four years.

How a rug is made

  1. 01The woolCertified organic wool, chosen for length and resilience. Long fibres are what let a pile recover after a decade of feet rather than flattening in two years.
  2. 02The colourPlant-based dyes, in small batches. Natural dye moves slightly from batch to batch — that variation is why a hand-dyed rug has depth a printed one never reaches.
  3. 03The knotHand-knotted, row by row. Density is chosen for the use: denser for a living room that takes traffic, softer and deeper for a floor a child lies on.
  4. 04The washEvery piece is washed before it leaves, which sets the colour and opens the pile. It is the step that makes a new rug feel like one that has been loved already.
  5. 05The years afterWashing, repair, restoration. We keep the record of every piece we have made, so a rug that comes back to us in ten years comes back to people who know it.

What we do not do

No synthetic fibre. No chemical stain treatment, no PFAS-based repellent, no latex or glued backing. No mothproofing chemistry sprayed into a fibre that a baby will press their face into.

These are not omissions we had to work around. They are the reason the brand exists: the rug we could not find was the one that had none of them.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Nestaground rugs made?

Every piece is hand-knotted in the artisan tradition and follows through our atelier, from which we run design, washing and restoration. We work from Granada, in Spain.

Where does your wool come from?

From the flocks of women we have known for years in the mountains around the atelier. We shear the sheep ourselves, so we know exactly what we are buying, and the wool is washed with a soap we make from olive oil and soda. No synthetic mothproofing, no stain repellent, no chemical finish.

Are the rugs really safe for babies?

That is the question the brand was founded on. Natural fibre, plant-based dye, no chemical treatment and no synthetic backing means nothing in the rug off-gasses into the breathing zone of a child lying on it. Our own son’s first rug is the one we still own.

How long does a Nestaground rug last?

Decades, with washing every few years and the occasional repair. Wool does not wear out so much as wear in. Pieces that come back to us for restoration are usually older than the children who first played on them.

Every piece begins with a conversation.
